408 "Goose" Squadron
HISTORY
408 Bomber Squadron was formed in England as part of No.5 (RAF) Group on June 24, 1941. The "Goose" Squadron was initially based at Lindholm, Yorkshire and was equipped with Handley Page Hampdens. It retained its bombing role and title throughout the war in Europe until it was disbanded on September 5, 1945.
The Squadron reformed on January 10, 1949 at RCAF Station Rockcliffe, Ontario as a Photographic Reconnaissance unit.
July 18, 1957 brought a new name, 408 Reconnaissance Squadron. Eight years later on May 1, 1964 the Squadron moved to RCAF Station Rivers to become 408 Transport and Reconnaissance Squadron. By this time all RCAF Avro Lancaster aircraft had been retired from regular duty.
Once again the Squadron was disbanded on April 1, 1970. It was moved to CFB Edmonton, Alberta and reformed as 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron where it continues to operate today.
